The style shown on this linked page works best when you have a little experience and time under your belt and are trying to fit it all on one page. Space is saved by placing the headings above the text rather than setting them apart in a separate column. The Skills Summary and Computer Skills sections use internal columns for the same reason.
Students with less experience will probably find the style that lists the headings in a separate column better fits their needs, because it helps to fill out the white space on the page.
Having trouble formatting columns? Use a table instead, and make the borders invisible.
